Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, common in tropical and subtropical regions. Its most frequent symptoms include high fever, muscle and joint pain, pain behind the eyes, rash, and, in severe cases, bleeding or life-threatening complications.

How to prevent dengue fever?

The best way to combat dengue is by preventing the proliferation of the mosquito that transmits it. Here are some key measures:

  • Eliminate breeding grounds : Empty, clean or cover containers that collect water (buckets, flowerpots, tires, bottles).

  • Use repellent : Apply repellent products to your skin and clothing, especially in areas where there are mosquitoes.

  • Install mosquito nets : Place screens on doors and windows and use mosquito nets while sleeping.

  • Appropriate clothing : Wear light-colored clothing that covers arms and legs when outdoors.

Dengue treatment

There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue. Management focuses on relieving symptoms.

  • Rest and hydration : It is essential to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

  • Medications : Pain relievers such as paracetamol can be used to reduce fever and relieve pain. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or aspirin should be avoided, as they can increase the risk of bleeding.

  • Medical attention : In case of severe symptoms, such as bleeding, persistent vomiting or difficulty breathing, you should go to a health center immediately.

Prevention is key to avoiding the spread of dengue. We can all contribute by keeping our homes and communities free of mosquito breeding grounds.
